Why is my cupboard bare?

Welcome to:

Why is my cupboard bare?

I hope you have had the opportunity to read my 3-Part series on immigration. If not, and you would like to read the articles, they are in archives, found on the Side Bar.  The first article "Illegal," is about immigration and why mass deportation is not the answer. Article 2 is about Mr. Trump's "folly wall." Article 3 discusses Mr. Trump's "Bad Ban."

This cartoon speaks volumes. I took the photo at my local grocery store last week. The bare bins made me think of Mr. Trump's mass deportation policy. I have seen first-hand the work of immigrants planting and harvesting strawberry fields. It is hard work, brutality hot, the pay is low, and living conditions are not ideal. However, the workers are glad to have a job and eagerly move on to the the next location.

I am convinced  there are not enough "American" citizen-workers to work and harvest the fruits and vegetables which stock our shelves. In article 1, I share a personal story. Mr. Trump needs to look at reality and not rely on the hype around campaign slogans.

I do support the deportation of "illegal" criminals, while I also support streamlining the process for illegals to become citizens. Economically, if nothing else, it makes sense - streamlining the steps to citizenship. If all the illegal immigrants, who work the fields which produce the food we consume, were suddenly deported,  our shelves would look like the ones in this picture...and the produce which was available would only be affordable by the "rich and famous."

I remember what that young Mexican-American told me as we were sitting together, "Mike, In Mexico, you work hard and  you get nothing. Here, (U.S) you work hard and you get something." He had pride. He was willing to work hard. And he expected nothing from the government. He was glad for the opportunities.

Mr. Trump's ancestry goes back to Germany and Scotland. Melania Trump (Melanija Knavs) was naturalized in 2006. Her birth-country is Slovenia, part of the former Yugoslavia. My family is from Belgium, England, and Germany.  Vice President, Mike Pence's grandfather immigrated to the U. S. (Ellis Island) from Tubercurry, Ireland almost a century ago.

We are a nation of Immigrants. We must find a way to fast-track citizenship for the illegal (Mexican) immigrants who have made a positive contribution to our society and economy. We must fast-track the deportation of the (illegal) criminal element. There is a better way...better than mass hysteria, ripping families apart, and stomping on the Constitution.

And, that is the way I see it.

Until next time,

Michael
